Black History Month (February)

February 1, 2020 marks the first day of Black History Month. Did you know that Black History Month actually started as “Negro History Week” in 1926 and was created by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher, in effort to extend the public study of black history. Well, we would say he succeeded! Black History Month became a full month long celebration in 1976 in which February was chosen to coincide with Fedrick Douglass’s and Abraham Lincoln’s birthdays, both powerful men who contributed to the abolition of slavery. Today, we celebrate Black History Month as a way to recognize the achievements of African Americans and the central role they play in the development of the United States.

At Coldfoot, we proudly celebrate and embrace diversity; we welcome all cultures, ethnicities, and walks of life, and actively celebrate our diverse work force. This month, our program manager as a member of the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Diversity Committee, is dedicated to helping celebrate the achievements and role of African Americans in our community. You can help too by taking a moment to celebrate diversity in your workforce by recognizing and embracing the different cultures among your team members.
